Critical Challenges in English for Secondary Students

Critical Challenges in English for Secondary Students

This revised collection of 21 critical challenges offers varied examples of ways to infuse critical thinking into secondary English. Genres studied include novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, songs and fairy tales. Sample activities include assessing which character in Lord of the Flies is the best leader; arguing for or against inclusion of a particular novel in the curriculum for a specific grade level; judging the extent to which the fate of Romeo and Juliet was beyond their control, and then assessing students' own levels of control over their fates. Exemplars in Historical Thinking: 20th Century Canada

Exemplars in Historical Thinking: 20th Century Canada

The critical challenges in this collection build on a conception of historical thinking articulated by Peter Seixas of the University of British Columbia. This conception, which is developed in detail in a TC2 publication Teaching About Historical Thinking, is built around six concepts:

  • historical significance,
  • cause and consequence,
  • continuity and change,
  • evidence and interpretation,
  • historical perspective-taking,
  • moral judgment.
The resources models how teachers and students can use these ideas to raise critical questions and to think more deeply about history. The challenges are built around various featured topics in 20th century Canadian history, but teachers can adapt the lessons to engage students in thinking about a wide range of historical events and people.
