Publications
Two features distinguish our publications from other resources that support critical thinking:
A content-embedded approach
Critical thinking is neither a curriculum add-on, nor a generic set of skills or processes that can be developed independently of content and context. Our embedded approach to critical thinking presents “critical challenges” that invite students to think about and with the content of the curriculum.
Teaching the tools
A major impediment to effective critical thinking is students’ incomplete mastery of the strategies, concepts, habits of mind and other intellectual resources needed to carefully think through an assigned task. For this reason, we identify the critical thinking “tools” needed to respond competently to every challenge we present and our suggested activities detail how each of these tools can be taught and assessed.
Our collection of publications include:
Critical Challenges Across the Curriculum series
Series of resources focussed on infusing critical thinking into the teaching matter at various grade levels.
Critical Challenges in Law and Government series
Series of resources supporting students in thinking critically about the operations and policies of various levels of government.
Tools for Critical Inquiry
Series of resources to address the “tools” required to think critically about the study of various subject matter.
Pivotal Voices
This series offers a new approach to teaching history. It recognizes there is no one story for most historical events, but rather differing accounts depending upon whose story is being told.
Critically Acclaimed Resources
A collection of resources that have been developed by other publishers and provide valuable support for teachers in promoting critical thinking.
