Practical Learning That Nurtures Quality Thinking
Educators and leaders worldwide are collaborating with TC² to nurture quality thinking in all aspects of teaching, learning, and leadership. This work includes:
- Developing ongoing professional learning for new teachers in Alberta school districts
- Sustaining critical inquiry through professional learning in Quebec’s English school districts
- Exploring powerful approaches to instructional leadership in British Columbia
- Guiding the development of strategic plans in Manitoba and Ontario
Recently, TC² worked with ministry curriculum developers in Newfoundland to examine how curriculum can nurture quality thinking and learner competencies.
How might we nurture quality thinking and key competencies?
As a new TC² Partner, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Education is taking on this challenge, working alongside TC² to examine how critical inquiry can shape a competency-focused approach to curriculum.
Recently, the curriculum development team participated in professional learning sessions that examined how critical inquiry and a framework for quality thinking can guide curriculum development, foster key competencies, and also support teachers in engaging students.
A key factor in the sessions’ success was the facilitation approach:
📣 "The facilitation style and posture during the sessions were those of a knowledgeable and trustworthy guide, rather than the fount of knowledge. I believe this was a key factor in the productivity of the sessions."
Participants were encouraged to reflect on how to design curriculum that supports both teacher and student learning and engagement:

📣 "The problematizing activities got us thinking about how we write for our teachers—an opportunity to reflect, discuss, and come away with practical ideas to apply in our work."
These sessions are laying the groundwork for embedding quality thinking into curriculum in practical ways that support teachers, leaders, and students.
